Baidu’s robotaxi service Apollo Go has begun public road testing in London in partnership with Freenow, a ride-hailing platform owned by Lyft. The tests started in the borough of Brent with safety drivers on board, covering both urban and suburban roads. The companies plan to offer fully driverless rides to the public in 2027, subject to regulatory approval. This marks the first time a Chinese robotaxi has entered a right-hand-drive market outside Hong Kong.

On July 28, 2026, Baidu’s autonomous ride-hailing platform Apollo Go officially began public road testing in London. The partner is Freenow, a European mobility platform owned by the American ride-hailing company Lyft. Testing started in the borough of Brent in northwest London, covering a mix of urban and suburban road conditions. This is the first time Chinese robotaxis have entered the UK, and the second right-hand-drive, left-hand-traffic market where Apollo Go has conducted testing, after Hong Kong.

In the initial testing phase, the vehicles still have safety drivers on board. These safety operators sit in the driver’s seat, ready to take over the vehicle if necessary at any time. Apollo Go said that testing in a complex urban environment is a validation of the technology’s maturity. At the same time, Freenow is responsible for local operations and platform integration; the autonomous vehicles will form a hybrid operating network with existing taxis and private hire vehicles, rather than running on their own.
