Jiang Gan Falls for a Trick
Cao Cao's million-man army is camped across the river, and Zhou Yu knows he cannot win a straight fight. Then a familiar face appears — Jiang Gan, an old classmate, claiming he just wants to catch up. Zhou Yu smiles and welcomes him warmly. That night, the two men drink and laugh like old friends. But when Jiang Gan wakes in the dark and sees a letter lying on the table, he cannot resist reading it. What he finds there will make Cao Cao kill his two best naval commanders — and hand Zhou Yu the victory before the battle even begins.
Chìbì zhī zhàn qián, Cáo Cāo dàilǐng bǎiwàn dàjūn zhùzhā zài Chángjiāng běi'àn. Tā zhǔnbèi dùguò Chángjiāng, gōngdǎ Dōngwú. Dōngwú de tǒngshuài Zhōu Yú zhǐyǒu jǐwàn shìbīng, xíngshì fēicháng wēixiǎn.
Before the Battle of Red Cliffs, Cao Cao led a million soldiers and camped on the north bank of the Yangtze River. He prepared to cross the Yangtze and attack Eastern Wu. Zhou Yu, the commander of Eastern Wu, had only a few tens of thousands of soldiers, and the situation was extremely dangerous.
Cáo Cāo de jūnduì dàduōshù shì běifāng rén, bù xíguàn shuǐzhàn, zài chuán shàng chángcháng yùnchuán. Zhǐyǒu Cài Mào hé Zhāng Yǔn liǎng wèi jiāngjūn shúxī shuǐzhàn, fùzé xùnliàn Cáo Cāo de shuǐjūn. Zhōu Yú fēicháng dānxīn zhè liǎng ge rén.
Most of Cao Cao's soldiers were northerners and were not used to water warfare; they often got seasick on the boats. Only two generals, Cai Mao and Zhang Yun, were familiar with water warfare and were responsible for training Cao Cao's navy. Zhou Yu was very worried about these two men.
Cáo Cāo shǒuxià de móushì Jiǎng Gàn shuō: “Wǒ hé Zhōu Yú shì lǎo tóngxué, wǒ yuànyì qù quàn tā tóuxiáng.” Cáo Cāo tīng le hěn gāoxìng, jiù pài Jiǎng Gàn qù Dōngwú.
Jiang Gan, an adviser under Cao Cao, said, "Zhou Yu and I are old classmates. I am willing to go and persuade him to surrender." Cao Cao was very happy to hear this and sent Jiang Gan to Eastern Wu.
Jiang Gan wore ordinary clothes and came to Eastern Wu in a small boat. When Zhou Yu heard that Jiang Gan had arrived, he immediately guessed his purpose. He decided to use Jiang Gan and set up a counter-espionage scheme.
Zhōu Yú zhuāngzuò fēicháng rèqíng de yàngzi, qīnzì chūlái yíngjiē Jiǎng Gàn. Tā lā zhe Jiǎng Gàn de shǒu shuō: “Lǎo péngyou, nǐ pǎo zhème yuǎn lái kàn wǒ, wǒ tài gāoxìng le!” Jiǎng Gàn běnlái xiǎng quàn Zhōu Yú tóuxiáng, dàn kàndào Zhōu Yú zhème rèqíng, yìshí bù zhīdào zěnme kāikǒu.
Zhou Yu pretended to be very warm and personally came out to welcome Jiang Gan. He held Jiang Gan's hand and said, "Old friend, you've come so far to see me — I'm so happy!" Jiang Gan originally wanted to persuade Zhou Yu to surrender, but seeing how warm Zhou Yu was, he didn't know how to bring it up for a moment.
Zhou Yu invited Jiang Gan to drink, and the two chatted while drinking, recalling their past friendship. Zhou Yu pretended to be drunk and said unsteadily, "Tonight we only talk about friendship, not about war. You can stay here with me." Jiang Gan had no choice but to agree.
Bànyè, Zhōu Yú zhuāngzuò shuì de hěn chén. Jiǎng Gàn què shuì bù zháo, tā tōutōu pá qǐlái, kànjiàn zhuōzi shàng fàng zhe yì fēng xìn. Tā ná qǐ xìn yí kàn, fāxiàn shì Cài Mào hé Zhāng Yǔn xiě gěi Zhōu Yú de.
In the middle of the night, Zhou Yu pretended to be sound asleep. But Jiang Gan could not sleep. He secretly got up and saw a letter on the table. He picked it up and saw that it was written by Cai Mao and Zhang Yun to Zhou Yu.
Xìn shàng shuō: “Wǒmen tóuxiáng Cáo Cāo zhǐshì zànshí de, zhǐyào yǒu jīhuì, wǒmen yídìng huì shā le Cáo Cāo, tóukào Dōngwú.” Jiǎng Gàn kàn le, fēicháng chījīng. Tā liánmáng bǎ xìn cáng jìn yīfu lǐ, qiāoqiāo huí dào chuáng shàng.
The letter said, "Our surrender to Cao Cao is only temporary. As soon as there is a chance, we will certainly kill Cao Cao and defect to Eastern Wu." Jiang Gan was very shocked when he read this. He hurriedly hid the letter in his clothes and quietly returned to bed.
After a while, Jiang Gan heard Zhou Yu talking in his sleep: "Cai Mao, Zhang Yun, rest assured — in a few days I will definitely have news for you." Hearing this, Jiang Gan became even more convinced that the letter was real. He decided to flee back to Cao's camp that very night.
Tiān hái méi liàng, Jiǎng Gàn jiù tōutōu liū chū le Dōngwú de yíngdì, zuò chuán huí dào le Cáo Cāo nàlǐ. Tā bǎ nà fēng xìn jiāo gěi Cáo Cāo, shuō: “Cài Mào hé Zhāng Yǔn yào bèipàn nín, tóukào Zhōu Yú!”
Before dawn, Jiang Gan secretly slipped out of Eastern Wu's camp and took a boat back to Cao Cao. He handed the letter to Cao Cao and said, "Cai Mao and Zhang Yun are going to betray you and defect to Zhou Yu!"
Cáo Cāo kàn le xìn, fēicháng shēngqì, lìkè xiàlìng shā le Cài Mào hé Zhāng Yǔn. Kěshì, děng tā lěngjìng xiàlái, cái míngbai zìjǐ zhòng le Zhōu Yú de jì. Tā hòuhuǐ jí le, dàn yǐjīng láibují le.
Cao Cao read the letter and was extremely angry. He immediately ordered Cai Mao and Zhang Yun to be killed. But when he calmed down, he realized he had fallen for Zhou Yu's trick. He regretted it deeply, but it was already too late.
Cao Cao lost two great generals who were familiar with water warfare, and the training of his navy also came to a halt. Zhou Yu's counter-espionage scheme succeeded, and he eliminated a great threat for Eastern Wu. This is the famous story of "Jiang Gan Falls for a Trick."
