Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage
Liu Bei has generals but no strategist. Then he hears a name: Zhuge Liang, the Sleeping Dragon — a man so brilliant that whoever wins his loyalty wins the world. So Liu Bei goes to find him. Once. Twice. Three times. Through snow and silence, past his brothers' growing doubts, he waits at the door of a thatched cottage for a man who is still asleep. What happens when the door finally opens will change the course of history.
Liú Bèi zài Jīngzhōu de shíhou, shǒuxià suīrán yǒu Guān Yǔ, Zhāng Fēi zhèyàng de měngjiàng, dàn quēshǎo yí wèi yǒu zhìhuì de jūnshī. Tā chángcháng juéde, zìjǐ zhī suǒyǐ bù néng chénggōng, shì yīnwèi méiyǒu hǎo de réncái bāngzhù zìjǐ.
When Liu Bei was in Jingzhou, although he had fierce generals like Guan Yu and Zhang Fei under him, he lacked a wise military adviser. He often felt that the reason he could not succeed was that he had no good talent to help him.
Yǒu yì tiān, móushì Xú Shù gàosu Liú Bèi: “Zài Lóngzhōng yǒu yí ge liǎobùqǐ de réncái, jiào Zhūgě Liàng, rén chēng ‘Wòlóng’. Rúguǒ néng dédào tā de bāngzhù, nín yídìng néng chéngjiù dàyè.” Liú Bèi tīng le, lìkè juédìng qù bàifǎng Zhūgě Liàng.
One day, the adviser Xu Shu told Liu Bei, "In Longzhong there is a remarkable talent named Zhuge Liang, known as the 'Sleeping Dragon.' If you can get his help, you will certainly achieve great things." Hearing this, Liu Bei immediately decided to visit Zhuge Liang.
The next day, Liu Bei brought Guan Yu and Zhang Fei to Longzhong. They found Zhuge Liang's thatched cottage, but Zhuge Liang was not at home. Liu Bei had no choice but to return disappointed.
A few days later, Liu Bei again brought his two brothers to visit Zhuge Liang. It was snowing heavily that day, and the road was very difficult to travel. Zhang Fei could not help saying, "On such a cold day, why bother looking for a scholar who farms?" But Liu Bei said, "No matter how difficult it is, I must see him."
This time, Zhuge Liang was still not at home. Zhuge Liang's younger brother Zhuge Jun told Liu Bei that his brother had gone out and no one knew when he would return. Liu Bei left a letter expressing his sincerity, and then had no choice but to return.
Chūntiān dào le, Liú Bèi juédìng dì-sān cì qù bàifǎng Zhūgě Liàng. Zhāng Fēi hé Guān Yǔ dōu juéde bù zhídé zài qù le, dàn Liú Bèi shuō: “Wǒ fēi jiàndào Zhūgě Liàng bùkě!” Yúshì, sān ge rén yòu chūfā le.
Spring arrived, and Liu Bei decided to visit Zhuge Liang for the third time. Zhang Fei and Guan Yu both felt it was not worth going again, but Liu Bei said, "I must see Zhuge Liang!" So the three of them set out again.
Dào le máolú, Zhūgě Liàng zhèngzài shuìjiào. Liú Bèi méiyǒu dǎrǎo tā, érshì ānjìng de zài mén wài děnghòu. Zhāng Fēi hěn shēngqì, xiǎng chōng jìnqù bǎ Zhūgě Liàng jiàoxǐng. Guān Yǔ gǎnjǐn lán zhù tā, shuō: “Dàgē zhème yǒu chéngyì, wǒmen yīnggāi nàixīn děngdài.”
When they arrived at the thatched cottage, Zhuge Liang was sleeping. Liu Bei did not disturb him, but instead waited quietly outside the door. Zhang Fei was very angry and wanted to rush in and wake Zhuge Liang. Guan Yu quickly stopped him and said, "Our elder brother is so sincere; we should wait patiently."
Guò le hěn jiǔ, Zhūgě Liàng zhōngyú xǐng le. Tā tīngshuō Liú Bèi zài mén wài děng le hěn jiǔ, fēicháng gǎndòng. Tā qǐng Liú Bèi jìn wū, liǎng ge rén zuò xiàlái tánhuà.
After a long time, Zhuge Liang finally woke up. When he heard that Liu Bei had waited outside for a long time, he was deeply moved. He invited Liu Bei inside, and the two sat down to talk.
Zhūgě Liàng duì Liú Bèi shuō: “Cáo Cāo yōngyǒu bǎiwàn dàjūn, bù néng hé tā yìng pīn. Sūn Quán zhànjù Jiāngdōng, kěyǐ hé tā liánhé, dàn bù néng dǎ tā de zhǔyi. Jiāngjūn yīnggāi xiān qǔ Jīngzhōu, zài qǔ Yìzhōu, ránhòu děngdài shíjī, tǒngyī tiānxià.” Liú Bèi tīng le, fēicháng pèifú.
Zhuge Liang said to Liu Bei, "Cao Cao has a million soldiers — you cannot fight him head-on. Sun Quan occupies Jiangdong — you can ally with him, but you must not scheme against him. General, you should first take Jingzhou, then take Yizhou, and then wait for the right moment to unify the world." Hearing this, Liu Bei greatly admired him.
Liú Bèi chéngkěn de qǐng Zhūgě Liàng chūshān bāngzhù zìjǐ. Zhūgě Liàng kàndào Liú Bèi zhème yǒu chéngyì, zhōngyú dāying le. Cóngcǐ, Zhūgě Liàng chéngwéi Liú Bèi zuì zhòngyào de jūnshī, bāngzhù Liú Bèi jiànlì Shǔhàn zhèngquán.
Liu Bei sincerely asked Zhuge Liang to come out and help him. Seeing how sincere Liu Bei was, Zhuge Liang finally agreed. From then on, Zhuge Liang became Liu Bei's most important military adviser, helping Liu Bei establish the Shu Han regime.
Sān gù máolú de gùshi gàosu wǒmen: zhēnzhèng de réncái bú huì qīngyì chūshān, zhǐyǒu yòng zhēnchéng hé nàixīn, cái néng qǐng dào zuì yōuxiù de rén. Liú Bèi zhī suǒyǐ néng chénggōng, shì yīnwèi tā dǒngde zūnzhòng réncái.
